The Timothy Hyde House Interior Design

Historic Renovation/Addition, Interior Design

2016

Recognition:

2017 Master Design Award Winner – Historic Renovation – Bronze

The Timothy Hyde House is one of the oldest homes in Newton, but years of unfortunate renovations had hidden many of the historic post and beam details that make the house unique. The homeowners wanted to restore these historic details, while updating the home with a more functional kitchen, master suite addition, in-law suite addition, and more bathrooms. Cummings Architects and Windhill Builders gutted the kitchen in the back of the house and added an open floor plan with a central island, breakfast nook, living room, and mud room. The original ceiling joists, beams, and posts at the rear of the structure were exposed and the luxe new kitchen was designed to keep these members in central focus. Other historic architectural details such as theĀ  original wood paneling hidden beneath layers of plaster were cleaned up and exposed on both the first and second floor. This historic renovation is a wonderful example of how preserving centuries-old architectural elements can be combined with the the modern design conveniences homeowners have grown to love.
