Historic Renovation, Addition (Interior Design)
As Seen on This Old House® Season 39
Cummings Architects was responsible for both Architectural and Interior Design services for the “Newton GenNEXT” project as seen on “This Old House®” and worked collaboratively with Silva Brothers Construction throughout the renovations.
The homeowners wanted to update the c. 1879 Foursquare home and add space for their growing family and in-laws. The original portions of the home were refreshed and the additions provided room for a new master suite, a pantry off the kitchen, a powder room, mudroom and rear entry, as well a spacious in-law suite above the new two-car garage. The kitchen was renovated and opened up to the dining and family rooms, creating a spacious area for the family to gather. A new deck was added to the rear of the home, extending the living space in warmer months.
All renovations were designed to replicate or enhance the original details of the home. The exterior of the home also received a facelift with new windows and siding, including a new swoop detail delineating the first and second floors. The original corbels under the roof-overhang were reproduced and continued around the additions and a contrasting trim color calls attention to these details. The end result is a gracious, albeit larger, home with beautiful period details that still fits perfectly into the neighborhood.
