When the homeowners of this Ipswich renovation purchased a small cape with beautiful marsh views, it became clear this would be the perfect property for downsizing. However, the cape lacked a dedicated master bathroom and closet, and one of the spare bedrooms was nearly unusable due to awkward and small dormer placement. The porch overlooking the beautiful backyard was in disrepair, and the clients longed to use their outdoor space often. These needs were all met with the design of Mat Cummings. The front entry was enhanced with white square pillars and a new navy blue craftsman style front door. The old windows were replaced with light blue Jeld-Wen windows to relate to the coastal feel of the property. The front guest bedroom dormers were blown out to create one wide shed dormer that vastly improved the use of the bedroom. On the back side of the house, a three-season screened porch was added, as well as a small overhang with craftsman bracket details for the deck. On the first floor, the awkward living area’s open ceiling was closed up to allow square footage for the new master bedroom with cathedral ceilings. A separate office space, new master bathroom and closet, and new custom kitchen cabinetry with oval island closed up the components of the renovation. The result is an adorable coastal shingled cape with craftsman elements that will meet the needs of the homeowners and their family for years to come.
