Coastal Victorian – Marblehead, c. 1890

Old House Journal, August 2018

This small Victorian house in Marblehead attracted the clients because of its beautiful location and Mansard roofline, but the interior needed a massive overhaul, and significantly more square footage. A two-story addition for the master suite and new kitchen was designed for the rear of the house, with new garden level patio and sun room above. Above the new sun room addition on the second floor was room to create a small roof deck, accessed by a spiral staircase. This new roof deck allowed the homeowners to get an ocean view of Marblehead harbor for first time. The front hallway of the original entrance was blown out to be a two-story space with white shiplap paneling, salvaged Victorian newel post, and blue decorative accents. With new blue clapboards and cream trim on the exterior of the house, Cummings Architects has designed a tasteful addition to this coastal Victorian home.
